If I had only kept my lips shut,
Tongue against my cheek
I'd still today be in the chips but
I just had to speak! 

If I had not gone and asserted
Personality
Into those dreaded words I blurted
I would still be free.

But, no! The pleasure of the hunt
And easy conquest of the weak
Took my foolish fancy by the hand
And forced my lips to speak!

Romeo now heads the P.T.A.
And coaches baseball teams
And never thinks of days gone by
Except, at night, in dreams.

If reincarnation does exist
At the base of mankind's root
Then the only prayer I have is this...
Lord, let me come back mute!
